This Week’s Highlight: Smart Water Management with IoT and Automation

Unitywater is responsible for water distribution and retailing in the regions of Noosa, the Sunshine Coast, and Moreton Bay. Unitywater is committed to providing an efficient, secure, and safe water supply to over 800,000 people every day. A key responsibility in delivering this service is ensuring water consumption is accurately measured for precise customer billing, as well as proactively managing and maintaining the water metering network.

Unitywater has undertaken a trial of digital metering technologies and now plans to proceed with a larger-scale rollout to 80% of its customers by 2030.

Through a request for tender, Unitywater seeks to procure core systems required to support the IT component of the digital metering system.

The primary objective of this contract is to implement an Internet of Things (IoT) platform and a Decision and Business Automation Platform (DBAP).

The IoT platform will enable real-time data collection and validation, as well as device management for digital water meters, loggers, and network sensors. The DBAP will automate business processes, including the orchestration of tasks across multiple enterprise systems. It must be suitable for non-technical users to create and update business rules and workflows without the need for coding.

Both the IoT platform and the DBAP will support Unitywater’s goals of improved operational efficiency, enhanced customer service, and water conservation.

The objectives of this contract are to procure and implement solutions that allow Unitywater to:

  • Seamlessly manage hundreds of thousands of IoT devices, including digital water meters, loggers, and other network sensors on various communication networks.
  • Collect, validate, and publish data received from the IoT devices and export the data to Unitywater’s data and analytics environment.
  • Automate business processes related to the IoT device lifecycle and customer billing, including integration with relevant Unitywater systems.
  • Manage alerts/alarms raised by IoT devices, platforms, and the data and analytics environment. Actions on these alerts/alarms include dismissing, pausing, escalating, or automatically creating a work order.
  • Ensure all solutions and processes meet all relevant cybersecurity and information management policies and standards.

This contract will be executed in three stages: design, implementation, and support.

The closing time and date for responses will remain open until the 5th of November 2024.
