The NSW Government is committed to supporting local industry and creating skilled jobs through significant investment in rail infrastructure. With one of the most extensive rail manufacturing pipelines in Australia, Transport for NSW (TFNSW) is preparing for the replacement of the Tangara suburban passenger train fleet, aiming to establish a long-term pipeline of locally built trains extending into the 2050s. This program will help revitalize rail manufacturing in NSW, boosting employment and apprenticeships across the state.
TFNSW is currently seeking Expressions of Interest (EOI) from suppliers capable of delivering various components for the Tangara replacement. Key work packages available for EOI submission include AC Traction System Inverters, Air Conditioning Systems, Batteries, Braking Systems, Control Panels, Passenger Information Systems, and many more. Companies can register to submit either Full Scope EOIs (for entire components) or Partial Scope EOIs (for specific parts).
Introduced in 1988, the Tangara fleet makes up around a quarter of Sydney Trains’ suburban passenger fleet and is now due for replacement. With a target of 50% local content, the NSW Government is committed to ensuring that Australian and NSW-based businesses play a key role in the design, construction, and maintenance of the new fleet. Looking beyond Tangara, TFNSW’s long-term strategy includes replacing additional fleets, such as the Millennium, OSCAR, and Waratah fleets, creating ongoing opportunities for local manufacturing throughout the coming decades.
TFNSW has developed a Strategic Business Case, supported by ongoing industry engagement, to establish a sustainable pipeline for rail manufacturing. NSW-based businesses registered on ICN Gateway are encouraged to participate in future industry sessions to foster collaboration and prepare for upcoming fleet replacement phases.
The closing time and date for responses will remain open until the 31st of March 2027.
