The NSW Department of Education (DOE) is expanding its program to deliver and implement e-cigarette detectors in schools. The program assists authorities taking action to combat this increasing and “unacceptable” problem.

DOE supports the work of NSW Health amid growing concern among principals and school communities about young people’s increased use of e-cigarettes and a lack of awareness of the dangers of e-cigarettes and vaping.

Vaping is believed to cause long-lasting damaging effects on young people’s brain development. The biggest misunderstanding about vapes is that they are reasonably harmless compared to cigarettes. In fact, one vape can equal 50 cigarettes. Detectors are a holistic approach and a first step to help protect young people.

This Request For Tender (RFT) seeks a single supplier or multiple suppliers to provide vape detectors.

Deliverables include an initial supply of 40,000 units within the first 12 months of the contract.

Detailed description/scope of works is to supply vape detectors incorporating the following requirements:

· multiple sensor detecting – vape, THC, noise disturbances with unlimited customisation

· communications – Wi-Fi connectivity with activation alarm and remote notification

· mains powered with rechargeable battery backup

· surface or inset mounting for ceiling applications

· no camera or microphone

· vandal-proof housing

· tamper and damage notification

· installation documentation

· technical support

· warranty.

Project timeline includes:

· tender evaluation and contract award – June 2023

· expected contract commencement – July 2023
